From Classroom Project to Cattle Care Pioneer: The BoviJet Story

Dakota Belling grew up in Polk City, Iowa, immersed in the world of agriculture. He later attended Iowa State University, where he earned a degree in Civil Engineering. During his college years, Dakota worked at the Iowa State Dairy Farm as a feeder and as a part-time farmhand on a farm just south of Ames. This combination of technical education and hands-on agricultural experience would become foundational in shaping his company, BoviJet.

BoviJet is an innovative ag-tech company that designs automated devices for delivering topical medicine to cattle. Its flagship product is a pour-on applicator that attaches seamlessly to cattle handling chutes. This innovation enables the efficient and precise application of medicine along a cow's back, significantly enhancing productivity and reducing labor costs in the livestock industry.

The idea for BoviJet started as a class project at Iowa State, where Dakota and his business partner, Eugene, were paired up. As they developed a working prototype, they realized the potential impact this device could have on the agricultural sector. They saw a real opportunity to address a pressing need in the industry—efficiency in cattle treatment, especially with ongoing labor shortages—and were inspired to take their project beyond the classroom.

BoviJet is well-positioned for growth, with plans to expand its product line to include more advanced agricultural technologies.

Dakota chose to partner with Ag Startup Engine (ASE) for its strong network and local support, having participated in Kevin Kimle’s classes and incubator program at Iowa State. BoviJet is a great example of ASE’s mission to support local entrepreneurs by providing them with the network of support needed to commercialize their technology.

“ASE has connected BoviJet with important contacts and resources in the ag-tech ecosystem. Through ASE’s events, we’ve been able to connect with potential partners and learn from others in the ag-tech space. The team at Ag Startup Engine has offered direct mentorship, making sure that founders are supported both professionally and personally,” Belling shares.
